Hard Candy is what i consider to be one of the best avoustic guitar singer songwriter albums of the 70's, with the exclusion of the great fingerstyle players who sing. I am surprised that Ned Doheny never made it famous with ths album, but at the same time nor did Jimmie Spheeris with Ports of the Heart/5(6).

Ned Doheny’s second album has become one of L.A.’s phantom treasures, a rarely heard gem of Laurel Canyon songwriter folk, mellow-down-easy keyboards, sexy R&B beach rhythms, Steely Dan–style jazz, and flashing teeth.

Ned Doheny ‎- Hard Candy (Columbia) Label: Columbia Value: A seminal set from Ned Doheny – a lasting bit of California cool from the 70s, and a record that's every bit as refreshing as its image on the cover! The sound is tight, but never too slick – well-crafted songwriting with equally well-crafted production and studio execution.

Doheny strums through "When Love Hangs in the Balance" and gets stickily sentimental on the closing "Valentine (I Was Wrong About You)," but Hard Candy is a soft, blue-eyed soul album from the studio caverns of L.A. Doheny isn't quite gritty enough a singer to make these tunes stick. but there are plenty of good mellow vibes here.
